What Is Structural Steel Detailing?
Structural steel detailing is the process of translating an engineer's design drawings and specifications into the shop and erection drawings a fabricator and erector use to build a project. Design drawings communicate structural intent — member sizes, loads, and connection design criteria. Detailing drawings communicate exactly how each piece is fabricated, marked, and assembled in the field.
A detailer works from structural drawings, specifications, and often a 3D model to produce shop drawings for individual pieces, assembly drawings for multi-piece units, and erection drawings that show where every piece goes in the finished structure. Anchor bolt plans, field bolt lists, and material lists round out the package a fabricator and general contractor rely on.
Accurate detailing directly affects schedule and cost. A missed connection detail or an unresolved dimension discrepancy discovered in the shop, or worse, in the field, creates rework, delays, and RFIs that ripple through the rest of the project. Detailing that accounts for constructability — how a piece is actually lifted, bolted, and welded — reduces those issues before steel is ever cut.
For fabricators and contractors evaluating a detailing partner, the questions that matter are practical: Does the detailer understand connection design and code requirements? Can they work within your shop's standards and drawing templates? Do they manage RFIs and revisions in a way that keeps the schedule intact? Those are the fundamentals a detailing partner needs to get right on every project.
